It is beautiful where I live. Actually, the South in general is beautiful. I love seeing the mountains, the green grass, all the trees, going to the coast, the smell of the ocean, all of it. It renews me, centers me, and makes me feel whole again. I am truly grateful to live in the South. That being said, there is one aspect in particular that really gets me jolly and that is the smell of fall.

I noticed it the other day: I was walking across my yard, noticing the beautifully manicured lawn and the slightly cooler temperatures, and I caught that familiar scent. I can’t quite explain it and I don’t know that I’ve ever experienced it anywhere else, but the aroma of fall is like no other. It is a crisp, pleasant smell that makes you feel excited that the holidays are close at hand. First Halloween with all the kids dressed up in their funny little costumes then Thanksgiving with all our family getting together and gorging ourselves. Finally, my personal favorite, Christmas arrives.

Fall scratch-n-sniffLast Christmas was a little depressing due to several losses and assorted problems in our families. This year, I have vowed to make our Christmas season a memorable one. I want to bake cookies and sweets, make ornaments, go insane decorating and entertaining, and have an all-around great time! I have decided, no matter what may come, this will be a great year! I am excited about the holidays for the first time in years and want everyone around me to feel the same. Beware; December will probably be an unbearable month around here!

I guess this post asks the question: What is your favorite thing about Fall and Winter? What do you for the holidays? I’ll keep everyone posted on my crazy plans, including my retro-themed Christmas tree!!!!
